The objective of the Foundation is to provide two high school or secondary school seniors with a $10,000 scholarship each, toward his/her education. ELIGIBILITY Any student who is a citizen of the United States, is a Fairfax County resident, is classified as a senior in a Fairfax County public high school or secondary school, and plans to attend a two- or four-year accredited U.S. college or university is eligible to apply. The decision will be based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, financial need, and a 500-word essay. document) FINANCIAL INFORMATION All applications must include: •A signed copy of pages 1 and 2 of Form 1040 of the parent's or guardian’s 2007 Federal Tax Return. •If self-employed, also include Schedule C of the 2007 Federal Tax Return. •If there is ownership of investment property, include a copy of Schedule E of the 2007 Federal Tax Return and related detail. Students should complete the application form and send it (being sure to include the appropriate financial information) with a verified transcript, student activity record (in the form of a resume), at least one teacher or counselor recommendation, and essay to the address at the bottom of this page. Completed applications must be RECEIVED (NOT POSTMARKED) BY 5 PM Friday, November 21, 2008.
THE ESSAY Judges seek clear, well-expressed, original essays. The essay must be typed and should not exceed 500 words. Topic: What’s the greatest hardship or personal failure you have had to endure? How did you deal with it? Looking back, what would you have done differently, if anything? How are you a better person because of the experience, and in what ways do you anticipate it will impact your future and your relationships with others?
NOTIFICATION OF WINNERS The Scholarship winners will be notified of their awards no later than December 19, 2008. American Direct Mail Marketing, Inc., will host the presentation event for recipients and sponsors in January 2009 (evening event to be announced).
DISBURSEMENT OF FUNDS: The IHFR Foundation will issue each of the winners a check payable jointly to the scholarship recipient and the college he/she will be attending. Each check will be mailed to the financial aid director of the college attended. The scholarship recipients are required to deposit the full amount of the scholarship with the college. Scholarship awards are made for the full academic year to be applied toward tuition, required fees, and books/academic materials only. Any funds not disbursed may be applied toward the following year's expenses following the same procedure as the initial year, provided the student is in good standing. (Before funds can be disbursed, scholarship recipients must provide a copy of the acceptance letter from the college or university he/she will attend, and a confirmation letter indicating their decision to attend.)
